7 Questions: A short interview with Craig Scoffone
Erographic: When did you become interested in photography?
Craig Scoffone: I started in photography way back when I was in High School. I was good at it, so I stuck with it.
Erographic: Do you have your own studio or are you most of the time working on location?
Craig Scoffone: I do have a studio, in a wonderful converted cannery building. This building houses a number of different artist's studios, and we are really, really fortunate to have such wonderful, affordable, work spaces in hyper, over-priced, 'silicon valley'. ... Although I do shoot on location aswell.
Erographic: Do you have assistance or are you working alone?
Craig Scoffone: When I am doing my fine art nudes, I work alone. I really don't have a need for an assistant when I'm doing this type of work.
Erographic: Was It easy to find models when you first started photographing nude?
Craig Scoffone: Pretty easy. I would work mostly with strippers, who were already familiar with my promotional portraiture and glamour/fashion imagery.
Erographic: What do you prefer: digital or analog?
Craig Scoffone: I just recently purchased a professional grade digital camera - but mostly for still life, stock imagery, and commisioned portraiture. I learned my craft with film, and I still love the organic quality of that process. I think this is a common feeling with people who have been shooting professionally for 7-10 years and longer. Learning with digital technology I think tends to allow people to be abit more sloppy with their
compositions and craft during their learning curve. Whereas, us older types, having learned on film, and shooting 'for keeps', tended to shoot more carefully, because you had to endure the costs of processing
everything, even mistakes.
Erographic: Do you have other artist(s) who you admire and inspire you? Craig Scoffone: Early on, there were the likely suspects: Avedon, Penn, etc. But with the internet, I have found that there are tons of people, doing really thoughtful work, that I couldn't even begin to name the artisans who have created images that I wish I had done : ) It's abit overwhelming at times, the quantity of talent now on display.
Erographic: What do you think is your best photograph?
Craig Scoffone: That would be hard to define. There are a select number of images that I have done that I think would qualify as my favorites, but not just one image.
